Day Trips and Weekend Getaways in Texas

A day trip or weekend getaway in Texas might be just the ticket to shrug off the stress of daily life. There are numerous travel ideas for Texas, whether you live in the state or are visiting from somewhere else.
Quite
possibly the most famous landmark in Texas, the Alamo is perfect for either
a day trip or a weekend getaway. It is located in the heart of San
Antonio, right next to the Riverwalk
(where dining and hotels abound) and numerous antique shops. At the Alamo, you
can watch a historical video about the famous battle or simply walk around and
look at the glass-topped display cases filled with artifacts.
For guests hankering to visit the outdoors, weekend trips to Huntsville State Park are always relaxing and interesting. The park itself covers 2,083 acres and is home to Lake Raven, where both swimming and fishing are popular in the summer. Just south of the park is the Sam Houston Monument, which is 67 feet tall and can be seen from Interstate 45. While you're there on a day trip or weekend getaway, you can also see "Old Sparky," the electric chair used at the state prison for 40 years.
Famous for both rides and leisure, Schlitterbahn is the premiere water park in Texas, and is perfect for either a day trip or a weekend getaway. There are Schlitterbahn locations in Galveston and South Padre Islands, but the more popular destination is New Braunfels, between San Antonio and Austin along I-35. Rides, slides, food and rafts are all part of the fun.
North of Houston, this is another great place for day trips and weekend getaways. Originally a railroad town, Old Town Spring is now a hub for shopping, dining and history. Antique shops line the cobblestone streets and winding sidewalks and there are always a few places to order funnel cakes or taste fine wine. The best time of year to take day trips or weekend getaways here is during the Christmas holiday, when lights and decorations abound.
Rural Texas is always fun to explore -- especially since the state is rooted in the Old West and livestock. Round Top is an excellent choice for your next day trip or weekend getaway, especially if you enjoy antique stores, arts festivals and wildlife. Go horseback riding around the hills, visit the Burton Heritage Society or attend one of the annual musical events at the International Festival Institute. Your weekend trips and day vacations are always exciting in Texas, and even though it might take time to drive from one end of the state to the other, the attractions are always worth it.
